Intersexual conflict during mate guarding in an androdioecious crustacean

چکیده

Traditional interpretations of mating behaviors assume cooperation between the sexes. The field of sexual conflict provides a contrasting view: The sexes are commonly in conflict because they diverge in benefits/costs of reproduction. Precopulatory mate guarding, wherein males attempt to monopolize mates by physically pairing before fertilization, is one expected case of conflict. Initial guarding models focused mainly on male reproductive success, considering mate guarding as a pure male mating strategy. Intersexual conflict models instead consider costs and benefits for both sexes. We provide new insights exploiting a promising study system for intersexual conflict: the androdioecious crustacean Eulimnadia texana. Androdioecy (coexistence of males and hermaphrodites) provides unique opportunities to test sexual conflict hypotheses because hermaphrodites can facultatively self-fertilize. The ability to self-fertilize is expected to decrease the benefits of mating with males, whereas it is less likely to affect guarding costs. This asymmetry can thus intensify conflicts, which can be easily detected, if present. We show that hermaphrodites suffer higher costs than males during a guarding event and thus prefer shorter guarding times, whereas males, seeking to avoid loss of mating opportunities, prefer longer guarding times. Moreover, larger male size (relative to hermaphrodite size) confers greater control over hermaphrodites, leading to increased guarding durations. As sexual conflict theory predicts, guarded mates are not ‘‘passive’’ interactors but struggle to maximize their own fitness. The result of the conflict is a compromised guarding time that differs from the optimal strategy of either single sex.

Does foreplay matter? Gammarus pulex females may benefit from long-lasting precopulatory mate guarding.

Precopulatory mate guarding (PCMG) is generally assumed to be costly for both sexes. However, males may gain by displaying long-lasting mate guarding under strong male-male competition. Surprisingly, the potential for females to benefit from being held by males has been largely overlooked in previous studies. In Gammarus pulex, an amphipod crustacean, PCMG lasts several weeks, yet females are d...

Intersexual conflict over precopula duration in mate guarding crustacea.

Precopulatory guarding in Crustacea is usually analyzed as a male decision problem. We suggest an alternative possibility that precopula is established as a result of intersexual conflict over precopula duration. Such a conflict can be expected when the male optimum for precopula duration exceeds the female optimum. As a result, males should start precopulatory attempts earlier, while females s...

Dynamics of intersexual conflict over precopulatory mate guarding in two populations of the isopod Idotea baltica.

Aggressiveness during intersexual conflicts is predicted to depend on its costs, the value of winning and the power asymmetry of the contestants, all of which may vary between populations. In the marine isopod Idotea baltica (Pallas) a conflict occurs as females resist the attempts by males to start precopulatory mate guarding. We analysed contest dynamics with respect to female maturity stage,...

Mate-guarding courtship behaviour: tactics in a changing world

http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.anbehav.2014.08.007 0003-3472/© 2014 The Association for the Study of A Mate guarding is one of the most common tactics in sperm competition. Males are expected to guard their mates when costs of guarding (accrued from physical confrontations with rivals and/or reduced foraging) are low relative to the benefits of ensuring mating opportunities and paternity. We inves...
